flickrmeet
After many months of trying to get to one of the Calgary flickrmeets I might actually be able to attend the one coming up in November. Of course the weather might say otherwise but I am going to give it my best shot (pun not intended or maybe it was). These guys sound like they have a lot of fun at these meets and it would be fun for me just to do some mindless photography. Stay tuned, as they say. Whoever they are???

Like you, I tend to shoot at a fairly serious level, just not weddings. Not my cup of tea. (shot about a half dozen...never found any real comfort zone in them) Nor, any real enjoyment.
I found your commentary on the topic of Calgary flickrmeets to be of interest. By that, I mean, specifically what you said about it might be fun to shoot some "mindless photography". On the surface, it sounds like fun...but the actual photography generally really isn't that interesting, or fun. (at least not for me) It is mostly mindless, and really doesn't present a challenge or have much to engage me.
What IS fun is the actual social quality of event itself. The gang are a pretty diverse and eclectic lot. You'll have a pretty good time getting to know the various Calgary flickr folk who show up at these events.
Somewhat disappointingly, I seldom make it out to these events. I usually get enough photography of the variety I enjoy, and prefer to shoot with a purpose in mind, as opposed taking "snap shots".
Hopefully, one day, you and I will meet up. We likely share a lot in common, not only in terms of equipment (I shoot Nikkor and Nikon almost exclusively, too) but also in perspective.
